Three Clicks

Are you a fan of classic movies?  Examples include Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and The Color Purple.  These films are enjoyed by multiple generations and become a part of the popular culture.  There are usually memorable lines that become familiar quotes.  In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is told to click her heels three times and repeat the phrase "there's no place like home".  She woke up back in Kansas, which is where she wanted to go.  Do you feel like you have been wandering around without direction for a while?  You may not be trying to get to a physical home.  Your desired destination may be another place.  However, you can follow Dorothy's example and click your heels three times.

Click 1 (H) -  Telephone - Disconnect any call (habit) that hinders your ability to hit your targets.  Do your best to handle praise with humility and criticism with grace.  Hone your skills with practice.  Do your homework.

Click 2 (EE) - Door Lock - When you turn the key or press your remote, the audible click lets you know that the door is unlocked and can be opened. Open doors allow entries and exits.  Your environment will be a key factor in determining whether you want to go in or out of the door.

Click 3 (L) - Pen or Pencil - Writing tools may click when the tip is extended for use.  The sound indicates readiness for the next step.   Listen for the cues that signal that it is time for you to progress to a new level.   Locate your limits and learn how to use them to your advantage.

Where do you want to go?  What are you trying to accomplish?  Leave a comment and share the clicks that will help you this week.

Cut and Color

Have you ever had a bad hair day?  It is a phrase that we use when our hair will not behave the way that we want.  You may choose to wear a hat or pull it back in a ponytail when it is not manageable.  If the styling issues continue to happen on a regular basis, it may be time to do something different.  Your hair is one of the easiest things to change when you want a new look.  A common salon fix is cut and color.  Modifying the length and shade of hair transforms your overall appearance.  The same concept works for your communication channels and styles.

Cut - Sometimes your hair just needs to be trimmed.  The split ends are causing the problem.  Similarly, your interactions with others may be hindered by the way you communicate with them.  When you share a message that is not clear or is incomplete, there is a break (split) in how others understand you.  Check the responses you receive to determine if you need to trim your message in order to remove anything that interferes with the true meaning of what you are saying.  If you want a more definitive cut for your hair, your hairdresser might cut it in layers.  This allows you to vary lengths and provides more styling options.  Sometimes when you speak, write, or listen to someone, it helps to think of the communication in sections, or layers.  Consider the 3 Ts: Tool, Tone, and Timing.   The comprehension of what you are trying to convey may depend on what method, or tool, is used for delivery - face to face, calling, writing, or nonverbal.  Practice using all of them to increase your proficiency and versatility.  The next layer is comprised of intention and interpretation.  Your tone affects how open others are to hear from you.  Finally, when you say something is just as important as what you say and how you say it.

Color - What is your natural hair color?  A better question might be what color would you like to have?  Do you want to be a blonde, brunette, or redhead?  Select the shade that matches your personality.  You can also dye your communication.  It won't always line up with how you feel or behave.  It needs to fit the situation.  Choose softer (blonde) words to encourage, comfort, and promote others.  Focus on the positive attributes.  Use harder (brunette) gestures when you want to display enthusiasm, support, and appreciation.  A standing ovation is a perfect example.  No words are needed.  Rising to your feet and applauding speaks volumes.  When you want to be noticed, there are bolder (red) words and moves that will draw attention to you.  If you run toward or point at something, you send the message that it is of interest to you.  Of course, you may want to incorporate elements of all three colors.  One way to do this is to get highlights.  They don't change the color of all of the hair.  However, certain strands are tinted to contrast with the primary shade.  This is an important communication concept.  There are usually key points that you want to highlight when you write or speak.  You might use bold, italic, or underlined text for written work.  If you are talking, you may raise or lower your voice to highlight what you are saying.  You can also repeat if for emphasis.

Does your communication style need a cut and color makeover?  Leave a comment and share how you will apply these principles this week.

Microwave Popcorn

It is common to display more effort when you have an emotional attachment to what you are trying to accomplish?  What does it take for something to tug at your heart strings?  What buttons need to be pushed?  Certain causes may inspire your participation.  Some people are animal lovers.  Others feel strongly about serving their community.  Your heart does speak.  You have to know how and when to listen to it.

You can compare your heart to a bag of microwave popcorn.  If the timing is not right, the kernels will not pop correctly.  There is usually a setting on the microwave for popcorn.  However, because bag sizes and oven wattage vary, it is best to observe the process and listen for the popping to stop.  Likewise, monitor your heart to prevent balance and perspective issues.

Have you ever smelled burned popcorn?  You are probably making a face now as you think about that unpleasant odor.   It is not a good idea to walk away from the microwave once you put the bag in and press the "Start" or "Popcorn" button.  Similarly, when you begin a new project, it may consume a lot of your time and energy.  This might be necessary to get things up and running.  However, there is the risk of burn out if you continue with tunnel vision toward one thing and neglect other things.

If you take the bag out of the microwave too soon, then there are a lot of kernels that may not pop.  When you take a half-hearted approach to what you are doing, there is a comparable effect.  You may only scratch the surface of your capacity for service and excellence if you are distracted.  It is tempting to try to increase efficiency and save time by working on multiple things simultaneously.  Be careful with that approach.  You don't want to miss the signs that alert you to move on to the next step.  Attention to detail is necessary in order to know when to shift your focus.

The bag will pop perfectly when you determine the brand (strategy) and time setting (schedule) that work best for you.  Leave a comment and share a popcorn experience.  Did you stay with something too long, quit before it was complete, or finish right on time?

A Nice Pair of Pumps

Your feet are a key component to your mobility.  They can take you in the direction you want to go.  You get better results from them when they are covered with the right heels.  Isn't it a great feeling when you find the perfect shoes to go with an outfit?  This week we will take a look at what a nice pair of pumps (gas and tire) can do for you.

Gas Pump - There has been discussion in the news recently regarding the rising cost of fuel at the pump.  Some analysts are predicting that we may pay as much as $5.00 per gallon.  Let's hope that does not happen.  The good news is that your pump, or experience, dispenses growth, advantages, and strength.  As your confidence and comprehension grows, you will recognize the advantages you have that make you strong enough to endure challenging circumstances.   Try to fill up each time that you go to the pump

Tire Pump - A flat tire will hinder your progress.  In order to prevent this from happening, the tire needs to be filled with the proper amount of air.  The tire is representative of your enthusiasm, or zeal, for what you are doing.  You need a pump that will inflate it with visible results and milestone recognitions.  When you can see that what you are doing is working, it helps you to keep going.  Take the time to celebrate your short term victories.  You have earned the right to pat yourself on the pack periodically.   Remember to set realistic expectations so that you are not continually frustrated.

Do you have a nice pair of pumps in your closet?  Leave a comment and share which ones you will wear this week.

Hair Care Products

Happy New Year!  May 2011 be the year that your hair, heels, and hearts work together to help you realize your full potential.  Hair will be the discussion topic this week.  Throughout the year, there will be a rotation between hair, heels, and hearts to illustrate how you can move forward toward success.

Your hair covers your head.  It could be a considered a protector of your thoughts and dreams.  Likewise, the products that you use to care for your hair are representative of what is needed to nurture and strengthen your creative process.  Shampoo, conditioner, and holding spray are common products used for hair care.   As you use them on a regular basis literally, think of how you can also benefit from them figuratively.

Shampoo is used to cleanse the dirt and oil from your hair.  It helps restore body (bounce) and volume (lift).  What serves the same purpose for your great ideas?  Maybe you can wash them with show and tell.   Exposure to the lather of trial and error will help you narrow your focus.  Only share those things that are complete and ready for scrutiny.  Also, choose your audience carefully.  You want people who will objectively help you, not personally hinder you.  They can help you rebound from failure and encourage you to keep going.

Conditioner is used to strengthen your hair.  While it is important to maintain and enhance what is on your head, you must also nurture what is in your head.  Studying conditions your mind and increases your knowledge on any designated topic.  Take adequate time to do the required homework to increase your comfort level and competency in your desired field.  Give yourself quizzes to make sure you are able to apply what you are learning.  If you can't explain it to someone else, you may need to work on your comprehension of it.

Holding spray keeps your hair in place.  It prevents the wind from disturbing the style that you have selected.   A calendar or planner is a great tool to help you stay on track and not get blown off course by unexpected breezes (detours).  Sticking to a schedule sounds good in theory.  It works even better in practice.  Time is a precious commodity.  If managed correctly, it can be a huge asset for you.  Be realistic when drafting your schedule and allow room for some flexibility.  Your ability to adjust to shifting priorities will influence the amount of confidence that others have in you.

What hair care products will you use this week?  Leave a comment and share how they will help you in the new year.
